The Art of Edible Dosing: Starting Low and Navigating Onset

CBy Canna Planet Team · June 28, 2026

Infused cannabis products, such as precisely dosed fruit gummies and infused chocolates, offer a delicious, smoke-free, and remarkably long-lasting consumption experience. However, because ingested cannabis is processed entirely differently by your body than inhaled cannabis, it requires a completely distinct set of guidelines to ensure a comfortable and uplifting experience.

When you inhale cannabis, cannabinoids pass directly through your lungs into the bloodstream, producing effects within minutes. When you ingest an edible, however, the active cannabinoids must travel through your entire digestive tract before being processed by your liver. In the liver, Delta-9-THC is converted into 11-Hydroxy-THC, a compound that is significantly more potent and highly capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier.

This digestive process takes time. The most common error is consuming an edible and expecting immediate results. Onset commonly takes 45 minutes to two hours, and New York health guidance notes it can be delayed even longer, up to four hours for some people, depending on metabolism, what you have eaten, and hydration. Never take a second dose just because you do not feel anything yet; wait at least a few hours before considering more.

For beginners, our golden rule of dosing is non-negotiable: start low and go incredibly slow. New York State regulations cap a single edible serving at 10 milligrams of THC and a single adult-use package at 100 milligrams total. For your first experience, we recommend starting with 2.5 to 5 milligrams, which usually means half of one standard gummy.

The physical effects of an edible generally peak around three hours after consumption and can last anywhere from six to ten hours in total. Because of this extended duration, infused products are highly valued by those seeking deep, uninterrupted sleep or sustained, localized body relief throughout the day.

If you ever find that you have accidentally consumed more than your comfortable limit, try to remain calm. Find a quiet, dark space, drink plenty of fresh water, and rest. Cannabidiol (CBD) or black peppercorn can help temper the intensity. Keep all cannabis edibles locked away securely, and always keep them completely out of reach of children and pets.

Edibles come in more forms than gummies. You will also find infused chocolates, hard candies, baked goods, and beverages, each with its own onset feel. Pectin-based fruit gummies are plant-derived and hold up better in summer heat than gelatin, while chocolates and drinks can sometimes feel slightly faster because they begin absorbing in the mouth.

Ratios matter as much as milligrams. Many edibles pair THC with CBD, which can soften and round out the experience, and some evening products add CBN, a cannabinoid often chosen to support sleep. If you found a straight-THC edible more intense than you liked, a balanced one-to-one THC to CBD product is a gentler place to start.

A newer category worth knowing is fast-acting or nano-emulsified edibles, which use tiny THC droplets to speed absorption, sometimes bringing onset closer to fifteen or twenty minutes. They are the exception to the slow-onset rule, so read the label carefully, and still give any edible its full window before deciding whether to take more.
