Concentrates 101: Understanding Live Rosin, Badder, and Shatter

CBy Canna Planet Curators · June 05, 2026

To the uninitiated, the world of modern cannabis concentrates can appear intimidating. Terms like live rosin, badder, sugar, wax, and shatter are thrown around with little explanation. Yet, for experienced connoisseurs, concentrates represent the absolute peak of cannabis refinement, concentrating the active trichomes of the plant into a pure, clean, and incredibly flavorful experience.

At its core, a concentrate is exactly what it sounds like: a product created by separating the microscopic, cannabinoid-rich resin glands (trichomes) from the fibrous green plant material. This process results in a highly concentrated extract that routinely tests between 70% and 90% THC, delivering strong effects and incredibly clear terpene profiles.

The extraction methods used to create these products fall into two main categories: solvent-based and solventless. Solvent-based extraction utilizes compounds like butane or CO2 to dissolve the active resin from the flower, which is then thoroughly purged in vacuum ovens to leave behind pure oils, wax, or glassy shatter.

Solventless extraction is a premium, artisanal craft that uses only water, ice, heat, and intense physical pressure. The gold standard of this craft is Live Rosin. To make live rosin, fresh cannabis plants are harvested and immediately flash-frozen at sub-zero temperatures. This process locks in the delicate terpene profiles of the living plant, which are then gently extracted using cold-water filtration and pressed between heated plates.

The resulting texture of a concentrate determines its culinary-inspired name. "Badder" features a creamy, whipped, frosting-like consistency that is easy to handle. "Sugar" consists of tiny, glittering cannabinoid crystals floating in a rich pool of aromatic terpene oils. "Shatter" refers to a brittle, translucent, glass-like sheet that breaks cleanly when handled.

Because of their high potency, concentrates require specialized heating equipment, often referred to as "rigs" or electronic vapor devices, and should be approached with great respect. Always begin with a portion the size of a tiny pinhead. By focusing on low-temperature vaporization, you will unlock the extraordinary, unadulterated flavors of the living plant.

Enjoying a concentrate usually means dabbing or using a purpose-built vaporizer. In a traditional setup, a quartz or ceramic surface called a banger is heated, allowed to cool briefly, and then a rice-grain-sized portion of concentrate is applied and inhaled through a water pipe. Electronic rigs and concentrate pens automate the temperature and make the whole process far more approachable for newcomers.

Temperature is the single biggest lever on flavor. Lower temperatures, roughly in the 450 to 550 degree Fahrenheit range on a rig, preserve the volatile terpenes and produce a smoother, more flavorful vapor, while running too hot scorches those compounds and wastes the very qualities that make a solventless extract special.

Because concentrates are so potent and so terpene-rich, storage matters. Keep them in an airtight, non-stick container of glass or food-grade silicone, in a cool, dark place, and refrigerate live rosin to protect its structure. Handled and dosed with respect, a pinhead at a time, a good concentrate delivers the cleanest and most vivid expression of the plant.
